Re: IT Professional with 11yrs exp in UK looking for a job in GCC
IT staff from th sub-continent do tend to have more qualification and certifications, but tend to lack in-depth real world experience. Where I work, the common complaint is that they don't integrate as well as the westerners. At least we Brits will give it a go when it comes to mingling, but the Indians just put their heads down and get on with the job. We can discuss football with the Saudis, places for them to visit in the UK or Europe, Hollywood movies etc...

Dont worry Ali. Took me about 2 years to find something worth my while. Its slow but it works.
Sites which got me phone calls from recruiters/headhunters and some of the HR people of the companies themselves were naukrigulf, monstergulf and efinancialcareers.
Gulftalent and Bayt were hopeless for me. Id be very surprised if someone got good results out of the other two.
Have you tried approaching people through groups on LinkedIn (search for security middle east, qatar, saudi, etc as keywords).

[1] Nothing wrong with these folks, some are very competent, some aren't. But they will almost always undercut you wage and salary wise and there is very little you can do about it. So accept it and work with it.

Is the basic consensus that as a UK IT guy there isn't really any point aiming for the technical positions because they will be taken up by the stream of people from places like India?
+1. If I were the OP, I would seriously re-read this post. What you don't want to do it position yourself in the same basket of eggs as the endless stream of Bangalore IT folks[1] and what you do want to do is position yourself as a UK candidate who understands the company's challenges in the marketplace and who has very strong technical skills and English language skills.

PC support, forget it. More specialised - networking, storage etc... you may have a better chance.

Nah, its storage and networking as well. Pretty much all except some very high IT management jobs.

Thanks. I was more referring to the state of things in Canada with particular focus on the GTA. Most junior and mid IT positions you will find filled by Indians and Pakistanis. Its driven IT salaries down a bit.
