Default probation period

is it normal to be offered an expat contract with a probation period (say 3 months)? is it someting that can be negotiated away usually?

It's normal in any employment contract, no matter which country. Between 3 and 6 months is most common.

3-6 months is usual. In UK usual too, and even without you accrue bugger all rights till you've been employed a year, so even if not written it's there in effect.
