Other half has been sacked
Need some help from some of the ladies on the forum.
My wife has just been terminated from a nameless TV channel (Shitty 7) She was a TV presenter for Kids Club and was 8 months pregnant when they terminated her employment. Now I know under the UK law, there are rules that govern sacking a girl thats pregnant, as firm often get rid of expecting mum's to save on maternity payouts, However, does anyone know the laws here regarding this. Needless to say she is going to Tecom to complain etc but i thought I'd ask you wise and learned bunch Thanks in advance |

Let me speak to my wife and revert mate (still early) we had similar issues when she was pregnant. She worked on a knowledge city visa.
This ****ing country... I'm pretty sure if it was because she was requring time of (naturally) there is laws in place. Granted there is not the same maternity laws as in uk, but there is some rules. Chin up mate, **** em. |

Re: Other half has been sacked
ok, in the UK it's illegal to sack someone while they are pregnant or on maternity leave, UNLESS it's a case of redundancy for economic reasons and that it's been proven that all other avenues have been looked at. Look at the directgov website for more info.
Even so, companies who make that decision have to tread very carefully and make sure they have an audit trail you can crack rocks on. Firms don't generally do this now, because a woman on maternity only costs them about a fiver a week, apart from the costs of replacment, etc... Here?! Goodness only knows! |
Re: Other half has been sacked
Not 100% sure of this, but don't think they are allowed to sack her cos she's pregnant. She should get 45 (possibly been changed to 60) days maternity leave, then back to work.
Hope you get it sorted and congratulations. N |

they can sack her, same happened to a friend of mine.
Still, it firmly puts working women in their place, doesn't it? |

That really is shocking! It's not even if 45 days' maternity leave is generous - or even sufficient!

Re: Other half has been sacked
Bad news Jammy! There is just no protection for the mother's job at all here and you have to work virtually right up to and right after the birth. It's draconian.
I just spoke to my friend who specialises in HR law here and she said that unfortunately your wife can't do anything because they have the right to fire her. There are no requirements for justifications from the Ministry of Labour in the UAE unless she doesn't get paid her end of benefits service. Good luck to you both x |

Re: Other half has been sacked
Is your other half Kirsty, the Australian lass who not only presents Kids Club but also dabbles in guitar playing and singing? She is our favourite TV personality.
