Default Job Application Follow Ups

Hi All,

I am an internet marketing specialist with more then 10 years experience in total
I have been in the internet marketing industry for 5 years and prior to it I have worked as a IT Consultant & Analyst.

On the 27th I started applying for a jobs in Dubai, however I found out they had a long weekend starting 30th June to 2nd July. I was expecting some response or acknowledgement for the applications, but I am quite surprised to find no responses in my inbox.

A friend of mine who works in Qatar says, this is normal. The people there are known to be lazy and can take weeks to get back.

I wanted to know if this is really the norm.

When you say you 'started applying', were you actually responding to advertised vacancies, or simply pimping yourself?

If you are just basically cold calling by e-mail, you won't get a reply and probably don't deserve one. Nobody would apply for a job like that in a more advanced/developed market - why should you expect anything different here?

I'd make some more direct personal enquiries first - find out who the key people are, and get on the phone to them to introduce yourself, and see how it goes..........

OK - then you may hear something in the next week or so. They may not respond until they are sure they have given everyone enough time to reply.

It works in Europe, getting a ton of responses at the moment. Got some interviews lining up for later in the year.

But yeah..the ME..forget it. I have even met with people..been promised all sorts of things, only to go cold as quickly as they appeared. Not sure what it is. This is irregardless of nationality.

Paracletus, I think I can agree with you, the websites advertise 100's of jobs but no one responds or acknowledges. After discussing it with a friend who is already working in the ME she says it is the norm, it is best to contact the companies directly instead of any job website and try to get through to the HR or Directors. I find this very strange!

Remember that a lot of jobs advertised don't exist. Some recruitment agencies advertise "ghost" jobs to get candidates for the future if things pick up.

Not only that, they also advertise jobs at way above the going rate to maximize their response. I have known a fair few recruiters who have jumped ship as the moral dilemma of their job has gotten to them.
