is this a good job offer

Re: is this a good job offer
Hi...new to this forum so hope I'm posting in the right place.
Me and my husband currently live in the UK and he's been made redundant, however he has had an offer of a job in Dubai, details as follows:
30,000 AED per month
basic medical cover
car / mobile phone / laptop
i have been informed a decent 2 bedroom apartment is approx. AED 150,000, I know landlords want money up front for apartments, the company would pay for the years rent and they would take it out of his wage every month.
Even though this kind of money in the UK would be good, we are not so sure if we could survive in Dubai, especially if i don't get a job for myself so I would have my own medical expenses etc to pay for and obviously utility bills / food to pay for.
Any help or advice you could give is greatly appreciated.

I think you will be fine on 17500 aed per month if you are careful. You wont be going to brunch every Friday at the Shangri-la but that is hardly the end of the world.
It is better to have 17.5k to live with in dubai than diddly squat in the UK and your hubby is without a job at the moment so I would jump at it.
Just read all the posts on credit cards, car loans etc and dont get caught up in the extravagant social scene when you arrive. Nobody is really impressed by what car you drive so get a Tiida and not only will you be able to run it for bugger all but you will also be able to park it.
I would rather be counting the dirhams whilst sat on a beach in the sunshine than counting them in miserable bladdy Preston or Macclesfield (my home towns) any day of the week. And if there are any Prestonians or Macc lads on here about to whinge at those comments; then you have been out in the sun for too long !!!!
So are you coming?

You can certainly find reasonable accommodations based on your income. One bedroom apartments in the Marina are now going for 100,000, or 8333 per month. A bit further out in Discovery Gardens one-beds are now asking 80,000 for the year.
thank you all for your replies. he will definitely be going out for 4 weeks, that is now decided. in that 4 weeks he may be able to get an idea of living etc. luckily we wouldn't have to get a car loan as he will be provided with a car but if he finds the place ok and thinks we can set up home there i will at some point be joining him. we are a yorkshire couple age 30 & 32, it would be nice to socialise and meet up with some new people and make friends rather than being stuck in an apartment but if we are careful with the money we may be able to do that. also in the 4 weeks he may be able to negotiate a better package if all going according to plan...fingers crossed for us.
thanks again

But you are right for sure on leaving the accomm for as long as possible - rates are coming down faster than a fast thing that is quite fast..

Hi,
Just to elaborate on the point about what happens if it doesn't work out.
Say your husband is made redundant (possibly through no fault of his own - that happens a lot out here) after three months. His employer will have paid one full year of rent to the landlord, who will flatly refuse to refund any of it.
The employer will seek to recover the outlay from your husband, which might mean they will wish to recover, say, 100,000-plus after paying him three months salary (90,000).
Are you with me? Tell me if I need to go on............

Re: is this a good job offer
I think this package is more than adequate, if you are careful, and the upside of the downturn is that things here are becoming a lot cheaper than they were a few months ago We have only been here a few months and whilst we earn good money we have been very careful to save as much as possible in case the worse happens, so whilst we are earning a bit more than your hubby's offer we are living on less and saving around 90% of it. There are plenty of things to see and do in Dubai without spending huge amounts of money. You can spend as much or as little as you like. Treat yourself to a nice restaurant once a month but eat out in some of the cheaper places to offset it. Take a one bedroom apartment to start with rather than a two bedroom apartment. There are plenty of landlords and agents now who will accept 12 cheques so just look around until you find one. Also try and get a deal where you don't handover 12 post dated cheques up front (they can and will still cash these), but rather give the cheques over each month. This can be done, as we have done it! Hire a car short term rather than buy or better yet see if you can do without and use taxi's. Also try and get your husbands company to provide short term accomodation for the first 2 to 4 weeks to cut the costs down
Above all when you get here don't be tempted to take out loans, max out credit cards and live beyond your means, you should be able to live decently and save a bit for the future
Good luck!!
