Finding work in Doha

Hi
My wife is currently working as a teacher in Qatar and whilst I visit her during half-term (28/10-05/11) I was hoping to make enquiries about work as a medical technician for Spring 2013. If you don't mind I have two questions:
  • I regularly check most of the major Qatar jobs web sites but was wondered if members could recommend web sites, agencies or Job Fairs, either UK or Qatar based, that they have found particularly useful?
  • Is there any value in trying to source work whilst in Doha or should I just have a holiday and continue searching via my laptop?

Any thoughts or observations greatly appreciated and I hope this isn't asking too much or doing so in the wrong forum location.

Regards
Boyd

Hi, Welcome to BE.

You are always better placed to find work whilst in the ME unless you already have contacts. By the fact you are here and on the ground it shows willing. You will also be able to make sure your CV gets to the right person not a half wit HR semi trained monkey.

Look at Sidra, the new medical centre, there MUST be loads of positions going there.

Good luck.

They don't have a HR manager yet! Got a message from a guy last week saying he had been offered it and needed some wheels.

To be fair it's not finished either, way over budget (4x I heard) and 6 months late too.

Welcome to the ME!

How could you miss it? We're doing a big software project in there, believe me the contractors (read Dell and Meeza,) should be shot!

You could try looking at ASPETAR or Hamad Hospital. If I was in Qatar and looking for work I would try to visit in person to drop off my CV to the appropriate department and skip the recruiters/HR.

I never venture to that part of town, there's F all there! Unless its on the Corniche, Al Waab Street or B Ring I don't know about it usually.

Thanks very much for all the information so far. I have already been in touch with Sindra and a Canadian agency, who were quoted on the Sindra site as vacancy contacts, are interested in helping me get work there. The job spec. they sent me could have been written for/by me as it matches perfectly what I am looking for.

Hi BritExPat
They must have a few people already on the ground sourcing staff as the job spec. they sent looked a proper document and not something on the back of an envelope. Would you be prepared to send me the details of the HR guy so that I can either contact him now via e-mail or try to speak with him directly when I get over there?

Thanks again to all who replied. Maybe I'll see you when I get over there.

Cheers
Boyd

I'm heading towards being in a similar position, debating at the moment whether to just resign from work and head to the middle east and see what happens.

At the very minimum I'll be going out in January with the intention of going with a list of people to try and see.....

I think that would be madness, the recruitment process can be painfully long in the ME and you would need a large shed load of money to finance yourself over the waiting period. Since you already have a job why not just keep plugging away at applications and try to make some contacts. An initial visit sounds good, but don't jack in your job until you've got another one.
