ESL Jobs

Hi
Have just joined British.Expats and will be relocating to Riyadh in June 2017 to join my hubby. Can anyone advise how I can go about securing an ESL job in Riyadh? I have a CELTA Teaching certificate, plus a BA (not English or English Language/ Linguistics) and a PGCE (Further Education), but all the adverts are asking for either a BA English/ English Language/ Linguistics PLUS a CELTA, or a BA TESOL or for a Masters in all of the previously stated. Find this a bit all OTT/ unusual in regard to KSA as all other countries looking for ESL teachers are perfectly content employing staff with any BA/Bsc plus a CELTA.

Hi and Welcome.

ESL is very popular here in KSA and Riyadh, so much so that there are many colleges and institutes that offer English Language courses. It is a very competitive industry to the extent that many of the institutes in order to keep the costs down, will recruit predominantly other Arab nationalities and so, the salaries tend to be very low - and standards not very good.

To give you an example, my wife ( experienced and UK qualified teacher ) was offered an English Teaching job for 3,000 SR per month, which entailed a 3 hr daily commute.

The other options you can consider are private tutoring - but generally, you would be expected to go to them, rather than them come to you. Alternatively, you could consider applying for teaching / assistant roles at an international school eg British School/ American School.

Similarly, you could look at applying for English teaching roles at some of the Universities, which run preparatory courses for their under grads who go through a year of ESL prior to starting on their subject. Bear in mind though that the Uni's here will run to a different semester timetable, so there are no Christmas or Easter breaks as such.

British Council is a good place to ask. They hire teachers and can also be of help in locating employers. I do not have the contact for the Riyadh office but they should be easy to find.

OP will have to be a qualified teacher to work at an accredited international school. CELTA is not a qualification that will allow OP to do that.

Universities in KSA do run English courses where the objective is largely to have a native speaker around, and obviously you don't need a teaching qualification to work in any university, Middle East or UK. That is one avenue.

Use your contact book, or your partner's contact book, once you've been there for a few months (word of mouth) and something should open up for you.

OP writes that she has a PGCE, although it is for Further Education. A god start for a job in a real school I would say !
