Group,
This has been briefly answered in the group, but I'd like a
confirmation from someone who actually travelled with the leter. We
appliced for I751 (Removal of conditional residential status), and
have received a letter with the following text:
"Your alien card is extended 1 year-employment & travel authorized.
Processing Your form will require a minimum of 30 days. If you have
not heard from us within 12 months, then may contact this office."
FYI: Vermonce Service Center, we are in NYC, VSC was actually very
quick sending the letter upon receivinhg the application (<2weeks)
Question is, has anyone traveled with such a letter. All we have is an
_expired_ i551 stamp (stamp expired on sep 6th, letter issued on Sep
2nd). Do we have to apply for I90, or go to INS @ Federal Plaza to get
the I551 stamp extended?
Thanks group, you've always been a great help.

Yes I have travelled with the letter, actually 3 months ago, went to Europe, Africa and back.
Make sure you carry your passport, conditional green card and that letter. When I travelled, my card was 3 months expired, they did not even ask for that letter. The computer shows you are waiting for an I751 decision I guess!

I had no trouble traveling with the NOA extending my status for a year.
I am curious though why you have an expired stamp in your passport that expired on September 6th if you applied for the removal of your conditions in late August? Wouldn't you have an expired green card (as opposed to a temporary stamp)? Normally USCIS provide stamps when the NOA has expired - certainly not when an alien has an unexpired green card. Confused...

FYI,
Travelling w/ the letter was no problem.
The INS officer asked my wife, "I am surprised you still don't have a
green card" (she's been travelling with an I551 stamp, in an expired
passport (plus the new passport).
She replied "I am surprised I still don't have a green card :) "
The card never came.. when I wrote to INS/congress folks, they said,
wait for the next round, maybe you'll get it.. you gotta love these
guys.
BTW, what happens when we don't get a new card, called, or whatever in
a year? The letter expires, and then what?

If the letter expires (i.e. it has been more than 1 year), you should contact CIS (aka INS) and they would probably send you another letter extending it for another year. Previously, you could just go to local INS office and they would happily stamp your passport with new I-551 stamp valid for another year but since I heard they are getting rid of that stamp, I'm not sure if they would come up with some alternate way of endorsing I-551 on your passport or something else.
Technically speaking, when you're traveling, the only thing you will need is your passport and the expired Green Card. The immigration officer will swipe the card in his computer and would get all the information he needs. The letter is not even needed. A friend of mine who traveled abroad had to show that letter only to airline staff for boarding card issuance. Airline staff (for obvious reason) usually take the Green Card and read it literally, saying that it's expired. But an immigration officer would normally not even read the letter as long as you have the Green Card.
