Default wife in US w/ me on K3 visa, next steps?

my wife is here in the US with me on a K3 visa. the i-130 application
is still being processed. my question is, now that she's here in the
US, what steps do i have to take to make her a us citizen? from
researching online, i have found that i need to file the i-485 &
i-864.

what about getting her a social security number? can she get that
directly, or do we have to do an EAD first?

i hate asking such basic questions but i have found surprisingly few
recent postings on this, maybe i'm not looking under the right
keywords. in any case, i look forward to learning the process and
navigating safely through the rest of this journey. this newsgroup
has been amazingly helpful so far and i would appreciate any help on
these questions, thanks!

Fora K3er you have to file for a EAD to get an SSN. Filing AOS is very much a muddy area. Mr F kindly spelled it out a few days ago in a thread. It basically depends on where you live and what the policies are of that local office, not the Service Center where you filed the 130. Becoming a citizen is not in the cards for some years yet, sorry..

Hero,

Maybe you are also not looking at the BCIS web site where there is information about how to become a Permanent Resident, and later on a citizen?

Regards, JEff

Ok. We are in a similar situation. I (the brit) have my K3 visa and recently entered the US . I've also heard that my I-130 has been approved. It says that I have to file an Adjustment of Status.

the only thing is that my wife received a form from the NVC saying that an Affidavit of Support I-864 was now required and to send a fee for $65 for its processing (no mention of an adjustment of status). But the Adjustment of status also requires an I-864.

Could I use the same one or does filling the Adjustment of Status cancel the requirement for the I-864 processing fee (as it has its own fee).

I read on this forum that someone sent this off and ended up getting a refund of it.

Hi Hero. Congratulations on your wife recieving her visa.

I haven't ever sent you a message, but have been reading your posts over the last few weeks. You see I am in a situation similar to what yours was - i.e., I was married in India, had a large engagement/small wedding both done on the same day. We have applied for a K3 and are now just waiting. I was hoping that you could provide some particulars of your wife's interview, what she was asked and if there was any trouble and how you overcame it.

Sorry to change the topic of your thread, but I hope you can help. Thanks.

post2000, the interview was smooth and simple. i would say that having
all the proper documentation at your fingertips and having everything
they ask for is the most important thing. just be truthful, tell your
wife to have confidence, and i don't think you should have any
problems. we had read the horror stories and so we feel quite
fortunate that maybe we got a really nice interviewer, but here's what
they asked:

-how did you meet
-was it love or arranged
-what does he do there
-when was the last time you saw him.

to that last question my wife said he's outside. they actually wrote
that down, or wrote something down when she said that. that was as
soon as she got in the door. then she had to wait and then about 30
mins later someone else asked her similar questions. maybe they were
seeing if her response was the same? i dont know, but after that they
looked at the album, my wife flipped through about 10 pages, then they
said you've been granted the visa, and we picked it up the next
afternoon.

2 more things that helped us: getting in line early. they say being
one of the 1st people makes it easier, i think the earlier interviews
are shorter. that was true in my wife's case. also, we called them
the day before to see what the amount to bring was. on the letter it
said 4900 but by the time we had our interview, the rupee to dollar
rate was 46 to 1, so $100 = 4600 RS. if we had brought the draft for
4900, they would have made us go and get one for 4600. they won't
take the 4900 and give you 300 back or anything like that. that means
you have to go to the bank next door and do that, and then get back in
line. also they won't let your wife take a purse inside.....that's
all, i wish you the best! can anyone else help me or comment on the
process after my wife enters the US on a K3 visa?? thanks.

one more thing, it helps if you can get her passport changed to
reflect your name (ie, the name change that happens once you're
married). otherwise you'll get the visa stamped on her current
passport and then have to transfer the k3 visa stamp to a new one....
