Where to File I-131

Hey,
I am applying for Advance Parole and am a bit confused as to where I should submit the form (I-131). I am thinking the Chicago Lockbox, is this right !?

I came to the US on a K1 visa and am awaiting I-485 approval (sigh)

Yes, the Chicago lockbox is correct.

And since you asked about how to submit the photos...I haven't e-filed an I-131 (or if it's even possible, I know it is for the I-765, but not sure on the I-131), you would probably need to send photos and backup materials to the Chicago lockbox, even if you e-file the form.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Thanks Rene,
Yes it is definetly possible to e-file the I-131 though I dont really understand the benefit if we need to post the photos anyway. I thought they might have used a previous photo they had of me.....

I was just reading through the e-filing instructions, and it seems that the benefits are: 1) you get to pay by credit card and pay right away - yippee. LOL, and 2) you get immediate confirmation of your filing. But you still need to send whatever backup is necessary (passport photos, etc) with a printout of your e-filing confirmation. E-filing doesn't speed up the processing at all, either.

I always just mailed things in...didn't do the e-filing.

We e-filed the last AP we had to get. I'm not positive, but I think they
did use previous photos.

Make sure you really read the form cause if you read the form carefully
some people don't send it to the Chicago Lockbag

Hi Kat,

Just curious who wouldn't send an application for AP to the Chicago lockbox?

Hi Renee

This is copy an pasted from my local office Denver site

Advance Parole:
See under "Local Filing Procedures: Travel Documents"

Emergency Travel Authorization:
See procedures under "Local Filing Procedures".

Travel Documents:
See procedures under "Local Filing Procedures".

Special Registration

Travel Documents:
Certain immigrants and intending immigrants already in the United
States may need to obtain a travel document to travel outside the
United States. Use Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, to
apply for a Re-entry Permit, Advance Parole or a Refugee Travel
Document, described below. Call 1 (800) 870-3676 to have forms mailed
to you. You may also click here to download forms or request that they
be mailed to you.
Advance Parole:
For certain non-citizens already in the United States wishing and/or
needing to travel abroad prior to the final adjudication of a
particular immigration application, advance permission is needed to
ensure that they will be permitted to return to the United States. This
permission may be granted at the discretion of the District Director.
This permission should be sought by, but not limited to, asylees,
parolees, people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and qualifying
intending immigrants with an Adjustment of Status (Form I-485)
application filed and pending with USCIS.

If the I-485 is at the Denver District Office, the I-131 will be
adjudicated at the Denver District Office. To apply for Advance Parole,
please submit Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document) at least
three weeks in advance of your travel date, addressed to:

Denver District Office
4730 Paris Street
Denver, CO 80239
ATTN: Examinations

If your I-485 is located at the National Benefit Center (NBC), refer to
the "NOTICE" under "Adjustment of Status." If your I-485 is at another
service center, mail your I-131 application to that service center
If you have further questions, schedule an appointment via the Internet
at INFOPASS for your local USCIS office.

Pretty Interesting Don't you think...it really makes you double check
your forms :)

We've just applied for AP for my son and had to submit the application at the local CIS office where his file is held (whilst he is awaiting security clearance).

HTH.

The instruction on some Field office site appear to be totally out of date ...
my local office still states AOS application should be sent
direct to them .. without the I-693

The USCIS "instructions" are a bloody disgrace!

We found out that my son should have sent his EAD renewal to the local CIS only after we sent it to the Chicago lockbox. Luckily, someone somewhere engaged in some joined-up thinking and it still came through in time.

I think if a file is held at a local office, all applications relating to that file (eg for EAD or AP) should go to the local office. At least I think that's how it seems to work...

...and on the subject of photos which are correct. ?

The I-131 form says 3/4 frontal view and http://travel.state.gov/pdf/Photo%20...2010-01-04.pdf says full frontal face.
