Default When can I work? K1 visa

Hello, I am in the process of applying for my K1 visa and I have read conflicting
reports about when I can work when in the US. I have read that I can get a temporary
stamp in my passport on arrival (this will be San francisco or Los Angeles for me)
but I have also read that this is no longer true after Sept 11th. Does anybody know
the facts?

Also, I have ticked the box on my form that I want a SSN. When do I actually get
this? Will I have it with my fiance visa after my interview in London or do I get it
in the US?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Russ,

You may work under K-1 visa. Well, let us look at the practical side of it. Most
employers require you to show them a work authorization document. If you apply
for employment authorization as soon as you arrive, it takes 60 to 90 days to
get approval.

By that time, you are married and need to file for another employment
authorization card.

It's really a lottery depending on your port of entry, take a look at this URL :-

Unfortunately for you it looks like neither SF or LA give the EAD stamp. You can
apply for a temporary (90 day) EAD locally once you arrive but it often takes 90 days
or more for the request to be processed and unless you are desperate it is often
better to bite the bullet and wait until after the marriage and file for the 1 year
EAD at the same time as you file for AOS

You will need to go to your local Social Security Office once you arrive. Make sure
that you have your passport with the unexpired K1 Visa in it with you as this is what
entitles you to a SSN

Russ,

Here is our experience:

Entered in JFK. They gave the EAD stamp without me even having to ask for
it.After marriage, we went down to the local SS office an appplied for a card. they
sent in within 7 days. Just had to show them the marriage certificate and the
I-94. It says on it "not valid without INS authorization." This week we filed the
AOS paperwork and applied for the EAD card. The officer said K-1s do not have to
wait 90 days because they already have an approved petition. He said we could pick
up the card on Mon. As usual with the INS, your experience will vary. We are in
Las Vegas.
