Default Question on overstaying visa, any hope of becoming a citizen?

I am dating a Russian girl now for about 3 months. I just found out
that she has overstayed her visa which expired in october. I am
wondering how she can apply for citizenship now or if she has blown
those chances by her overstay. She has said that I am the reason she
did not return so I feel compelled to help her, however I do not feel
right about using marriage as a way to gain citizenship so I am looking
for alternatives for her. From what I can find online it looks like
the only option right now is for her to return home and re-apply in 3
years. Are there any other alternatives to this situation?

The jump from visa holder to citizen isn't that direct. She will first somehow need to become a permanent resident (if by marriage, then after 3 years of PR status she can apply for citizenship....if not by marriage, then 5 years). You don't say what visa she was on which expired. Marriage to a USC is obviously the easiest way to stay here, but it must be a legitimate marriage, not for the purpose of a green card. If she can change her status to something else while still here in the USA (like student or employment) that might work out...otherwise she'll have to leave the USA and face any potential ban that might be put on her. She might want to have a consultation with an immigration attorney to discuss her options.

Best Wishes,
Rene
