From what I gather there is no set timeframe but I'm moving over in May and getting married in July of this year...

I'm just wondering about how long it is before you can become a proper US citizen?

It's hard to predict a time, because you have to have been a PR for 3 years (if still married to a USC) before you can apply for citizenship. So it really depends on when you get your green card.

Just as a general idea...try this:

Marry in July 2010.
File AOS in August 2010.
Become a PR in February 2011.
Apply for citizenship in February 2014
Become a citizen in August 2014.

Just as an example.

I entered the US on a K-1 visa. I applied for AOS in June 1998, got my GC in April 2001, and was a USC by June 2004. As always, YMMV.

Our own personal timeline was:

Entered on K-1 in April 2004.
Applied for AOS in June 2004.
Received green card in July 2005.
Became a USC in April 2009.
