Hi
I was wondering if there is any provision that would allow people waiting for EAD (from AOS) to work volunteerily. I heard that from one of F-1 students. While they wait for OPT EAd they can work volunteerily(without pay) with the permission from school DSO/ISO(immigration handler)
Can someone throw light on this? And how to go about it.
Regards
Dhabud

There's a difference between volunteering and working for free.
Volunteering is allowed. That means charitable organizations, not full time, and none of the other volunteers are paid. E.g. serving food in the homeless shelter, teaching people to read, being a Big Brother or Big Sister, that kind of thing.
Working for free to try to "get your foot in the door" before you're given permission to work is not allowed.

If not it appears that there was some conflicting fews on this as some places will not even let you do voluntary work without a S/S.
But you can do voluntary work saying that I would make sure that the place you go to writes a letter for you to keep expressing that there is no payment involved just incase someone decides to make an issue out of it.
Good Luck Great Idea.
