I am curious if you know if the US will recognize the marriage of an
American to a Cuban national that takes place in Columbia?

Normally, yes, especially if you were both legally free to marry and
both were present.
Why would you think there could be a problem?

General rule is that a marriage is valid if it is valid under the law of the place of "celebration."
BTW, www.mapquest.com shows ten different towns named "Columbia" in the United States, the only major one being in South Carolina. In asking questions like yours, it can be quite helpful in giving a little more information on the state or country where the marriage took place.

To be honest, I didn't even think of the COUNTRY of Colombia. I guess the fact that it was spelled in English rather than Spanish obscured that detail to my mind.

You guys are just hilarious... Thanks for the feedback.. No we are not
the same sex and yes I was talking about Colombia the South American
country. I guess that is what I get for using spell check and not
checking verifying.
Here is a funny.. I once sent an email to about 200 people around the
world on an engineering alias and used spell check that corrected what
was supposed to be inconsistence and made it incontinence. Man did I
get a bunch of shit for that..
On a serious note.. My girl was concerned that the US wouldnt
recognize the marriage. I am in the process of having an invitation
sent to her via a Colombian friend residing in Bogota. Having her come
to Bogota to marry is one of the few options that I have without going
back to Cuba, marring and risk getting fined by the fine Bush
administration. I am also working on drafting up a proposal to the
treasury department for a humanitarian visa so I can go there
"legally". We dont feel waiting for the K1 visa to be processed and
hope that this is a faster process...

On the serious note -- note the general rule -- the question will be one of COLOMBIAN law.

Keith I gather your future wife is in Cuba right now (?) This is one of
those immigration "gray issues" that I think will have to be addressed
in the next coming years.
There is provision in the law for family members to visit once a year
but I don't know if this applies to spouses (?)
I think it would be better if you married in Colombia. On a related
note----our radio group is trying to get a visa for a speaker coming
from Havana (he works for RHC) and State has told us when we started the
process to start it *one year before* as there is currently an enforeced
slow-up of visa applications for Cubans seeking to enter the USA as
temporary visitors. So I can imagine other kinds of visas involving
Cuban nationals would have the same delays.
Does the Swiss embassy still handle US interests there in Havana? ("the
US Interests Section")

I am trying to marry in Colombia because if I do it in Cuba I chance
being fined for "unauthorized travel to Cuba". I have a Colombian
friend who is inviting her to Colombia so she can get a visa from
Cuba. He was not aware that Colombia does not perform DCF for non
residents anymore. As of when where you aware of this?

The issue is that she is not his spouse. In order to file a fiance visa,
he would have to admit that he met her during an illegal visit to Cuba.
I don't know if CIS cares. After all, their area of jursidiction is with
the immigrant.
