Unusual Employment Authorization Question?

I was issued my K3 visa from the Vancouver Consulate, this was May
2002. Back then Vancouver was also sending permission for Employment
Authorization with the K3, to be given at the POE into the US. So
when I first went into the US with my K3 visa, I was very careful to
get everything in that letter. So the officer who dealt with me
stamped my passport AND my I-94 with Employment Authorized. I then
used this to go to the Social Security office, along with the letter
from the Vancouver Consulate. And was able to get a Social Security
number/card that says "For Employment Use Only".
Today when I called the Customer Service Line to ask a few questions,
I asked him if once I have the I-485 case pending, what happens if my
K3 expires? DO I need to file for extension of status. He told me
no, that I was classified as a "pending" case, and if I wanted to
travel after the K3 expires, I would need to file for advance parole,
but other than that, nothing needed to be filed. But he said if I
wanted to work, I should apply for EAD. I explained to him that I
already have my SSN, and he said when my K3 expires, that my EAD
expires. But I dont have any Employment authorized documentation,
just my stamped passport, and my SSN. Does a SSN expire? I thought
you can only ever have one.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure the officer is correct. You will only ever have one SSN, but your work authorization will expire when your visa expires. You will need to apply for a new EAD which will be valid for 1 year and you will need to reapply annually until you get your green card.
From my own experience, I had 3 EADs prior to getting my green card!

If you don't have an EAD, then you can not work, no matter what the SS
card says. So, when the EAD expires, you need another one. The SSN
doesn't expired, but your ability to work will expire when the EAD does.

When I came through in May 2002, Vancouver Consulate was giving
Employment Authorization. So when I showed that letter at the POE in
Victoria, the customs officer called the Vancouver Consulate, and they
approved it and he stamped my passport and my I-94. I asked what I do
then, and the customs officer told me to go to the Social Security
office in Olympia to apply for my SSN. It was no problem applying for
my SSN, and received a card with the number and "For Employment Only"
So I assumed that was what I needed.
So I guess now I have to file for an EAD before my K3 expires. Do you
all suggest filing electronically or by mail?
Thanks

Hi Linda
If you want to file EAD then it doesnt matter if you file by mail or Online. Only difference it will make is that of 2-3 days of your mailing in applicationa and they opening it.
One more thing, if your office accepts EAD application in person then thats the BEST way. Visit USCIS website to find ur local offices' filing procdure.
Hopefully if you file in person u should be able to get the EAD same day. Make sure u carry your NOA for I-130 and I-485 filing.

Thanks so much for this information. My local office is Seattle. It
doesn't mention anything about filing in person, it does offer the
mailing address.
This is what it says under the Walk-Ins section:
***
Prior to coming to the local office to speak with an Immigration
Information Officer, you are encouraged to call the National Customer
Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. If the customer service
representative is unable to answer your question, you can make an
appointment to visit the Seattle District Office and speak directly
with an Immigration Information Officer. If an appointment is
necessary, you will be provided a time and date to come to the local
office, as well as a confirmation number. Please arrive at the local
office 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. If you are
unable to make your scheduled appointment, please call 1-800-375-5283
to cancel or reschedule.
The local office will still serve "walk-in" customers, however; only a
limited number of tickets will be issued daily on a first-come,
first-served, basis. Tickets may be obtained beginning at 7:00 AM
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, tickets may be
obtained starting at 10:30 AM. Please note that you may have to wait
several hours until your number is called.
***
It just doesnt say what it will accept or do for walk-ins. So if I
call the Customer Service line, I can make an appointment through
them?
I haven't filed my AOS yet, I am mailing it off tomorrow. Today I was
tying up loose ends and making copies of everything. So I will have
to wait for my notice of action from the AOS to come before I can go
and apply for the EAD. I'm kind of confused as to how it is going to
work, because my passport and I-90 are both stamped with Employment
Authorized. Plus I have a SSN with Employment Authorization. It was
a big mix up from the original K3'ers from the Vancouver Consulate I
guess.
Thanks so much for your help with this. I am crossing my fingers that
Seattle takes walk-ins for the EAD. That would be really good. You
actually get it the same day you go apply for it? Sounds too good to
be true!!![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
