traveling with a Green card

My question is:

My husband (he's from Germany) has a greencard, he has been in the states for 6
years now--his German passport is expired---How do we go about traveling out of
the USA?
We are wanting to go to the Caribbean or Mexico in the near future--- possibly
this summer...

(I have an American Passport, I am a citizen)

He will need his German passport renewed, plus he will need whatever
visa is required (if any) for the country he is visiting.

I'd think he should be able to get his passport renewed at a German
consulate in here in the U.S.
