British Expats - temp visa

I cant find any info about this...i have a temp resident visa and have been here nearly a year. My wife who is Australian and i are thinking of moving back to the uk as it is nigh on impossible to get some work!! Where does that leave my visa? Would we be able to return to Oz within the 2 year time limit and would i have to apply again after the 2 years?
Most of my wifes family are here in Oz so the chancs of coming back in the future are high.

Oz Immigration are no help? I think the situation used to be that to get a renewal after the 2 year limit, you had to show that you had spent a significant amount of the prior 2 years in Oz. But there may be special circumstances - like not being able to get work.
