Thank you all,

Here is the IRS website re: tax transcripts:

http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html

Call the 1-800-829-1040 number and you can order them through the automated system and there is no fee.

If you have the W-2's to go with them, so much the better.

How soon can people order transcripts? We filed a few weeks ago, so I don't know if that's enough time, or if we have to wait til after April 15th?

If you have a short amount of time (can't wait for the mailed copies), you can ask the IRS to fax them to you by calling the number given by Rete above.

Oops, sorry! I didn't mean that we don't have enough time. We're waiting on Miami for our AOS date, so we have all the time in the world! What I meant was that do we have to give the IRS time to prepare stuff like that, or is it something we can get pretty much right after we file?

Just using a little common sense (I do have a little you know), I would think once you have received your refund then the IRS has inputted your return into the central computer data banks and therefore transcripts would be available. No point in ordering them too far in advance.

Besides Kate, I thought you and Corey were thinking of filing an amendment for the 2003 return.

I called the phone number, got to talk to a "live" person. He prepared the transcripts while I was on the phone, I got them in the mail next week, ~10 c. days later.

Just looked at the IRS FAQ and looked up what we'd need to do. I think it's the 1040X form we need? It also says that we can adjust our exemptions. Last year, we put "1" on our W4's where it asks if anyone can claim you as a dependant. H & R Block advised us to put "0" this year, and we'd have a smaller take-home pay, but we'd have the possibility of a slightly larger refund. I'd like to do this on our amendment.

I'm going to call them later and ask a few questions, as Corey already cashed his refund check, and because I owe a little less than his refund was, I went through H & R Block's EZPay thingy, where they pay it for you, and you pay their lender, etc. I know nothing will happen with that until April 15th, so I don't want to throw a spanner in the works and end up having to wait weeks and weeks before we can get transcripts, just in case our interview date comes soon. (Hey, I can dream, right???!!! )

I'd also like to be able to do this ourselves, as we can't really afford to pay H & R Block all over again, so I'm hoping it won't be too complicated.

Ok, just talked to them. The guy told me that amendments take 8-12 weeks to process, and as we don't know when our AOS interview will be, it might be a little tricky to time it so we can get transcripts for it. He suggested leaving our return as it is for now, and then explain to USCIS that we'll be amending to file jointly after the interview. (Unless we get our interview notice, and it's months and months from now, then we'll go ahead and amend it now.)
