SSN without EAD?

When/if I eventually get to USA it would be unlikely I would work. Now don't blast me! I'm not lazy .. I'm old !!!

Is it possible to get a SSN without applying for EAD?

I am not entirely sure the answer to this, but based on my experience at the SSN office here in MI, I was only able to get it because I was going to be working, otherwise they were going to make me wait until my AOS had been approved, and I was a PR.

Good luck,
Sean

I'm not an expert on this subject, but I think it depends on what sort of visa you enter the country with. For example, as far as I understand K3's (spouses of USC) are not allowed to get their SS# until they have their EAD, but K1's (fiance's of USC) are allowed to get their SS# without having the EAD.

Well .. .it would be K3. We aren't getting married until Dec '04 as I can't move anyway until mid 2005.

It just seems a bit weird. I can marry, move and live there .. and I can pay my taxes. But without SSN, I can't get a driver's licence!

BTW .. this will be Indiana.

My Japenese au-pair got one. She needed it in order to purchase and license/insure an automobile. She is here on a J visa.

But.. K1s already HAVE EAD from the moment they enter, don't they? So, why
would they need the ability to get an SSN without EAD?

You could get an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) instead of a SSN. This is what you would use for tax purposes and you can put the ITIN number on your bank accounts. I don't see why you couldn't use the ITIN for a license as well.

I'm a k-1 and I failed to get my EAD at POE (my fault, I didn't remember to request it).

From the reading I've been doing yesterday and today I understand it's not that big a deal if you get an I-94 with a K-1 annotation stamped on it, which I have. Now I can apply for my SSN that allows me to work.

Also from the reading I've done I found out that without EAD you can apply for a not-allowed-to-work SSN, so for Gigiola, the answer is yes, you can get a SSN without EAD and you need not work.

general info http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html
documents you need http://www.ssa.gov/ss5doc/

But I am not a lawyer and my advice is just an opinion, blah blah ....

Thanks Bequibar,

This makes sense.

Now, of course, I'm wondering if I can do this .. and then, if I change my mind, apply for an EAD sometime in the future!

To explain a little: I have a very elderly mum and two sorta grown kids who will not be coming with me and I need to be out of US for far more time than any sensible company would allow for vacation time. Still .. temp work could still be attractive!

Hi Gigiola,
Just make sure you're not out of the US so much that you lose your status while waiting for your green card.

No Norah .. and thanks,

I'm talking about a couple of visits a year .. perhaps a month duration.

Haven't posted much because all this is so far ahead, but I'm an avid reader and take all advice very much to heart!
