Default SSN required to marry in Ohio?

Hi folks,

Just starting my (UKC) journey of applying for K1 with fiancée (USC).

Planning to marry in Ohio, but the website for the local probate court explicitly says:

Each applicant must provide a social security number.
USC is a resident of Ohio, what do we do as I won't have SSN in this initial 90 days?

Full text from site :
Spoiler:
What are the Procedures Regarding Marriage Licenses?
In the State of Ohio, the application for a marriage license must be made in the county of either applicant. If neither applicant is a resident of Ohio, the application must be made in the county in which the ceremony is performed.
Both parties are required to be present at the time of making the application for the marriage license. If either, or both applicants are physically incapacitated, their physician must complete and affidavit as to the physical disability, and this affidavit shall be filed with the application for the marriage license.

Each applicant must provide a social security number.

NI No? You can't provide what you don't have.

When I married in NC I signed a waiver stating that I didn't have one.

Start with the court house closest to a large university - they are likely to be familiar with the process for non-USCs.

With that said if they won't budge then K-1 visa holders are eligible for an SSN. As long as the system has you it'll take a week or so in the mail.

Exactly what tom169 said. If they MUST have a SSN for the UKC, you can apply for one about a week after arrival in the USA, takes about 2 weeks to come in the mail. Still well within the 90 days you are given to get married.

I'll ask my stepdaughter for clarification - she's a lawyer in Ohio.

Well, here's information as only a lawyer could give it. This is her verbatim response: "Marriage is State's rights, so Ohio rules would be enforced unless there's an exception. And Ohio isn't big on exceptions because it's a giant horse's ass."

So, I suggest your USC fiancé contact the local county clerk's office and get verification from them for your scenario.

Thanks for the help guys, seems clear what my next steps are to figure this out, its reassuring that I can get my SSN during those 90 days, I did not realise that.

That is brilliant Ian, I guess I've got some things to look forward to living in Ohio.

Which the OP won't be able to get, as he will be eligible for one.

If the worst comes to the worst and getting married in Ohio turns out to be a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare you and your soon-to-be spouse could always just take day trip to Las Vegas ...

In Virginia it wasn't a legal requirement but their computer system insisted on it so we just put 000-00-0000! Like the others have said though, you can get your SS card well within a month of arriving.
