Is she lying or is this possible? I waited for over an hour to apply and so I just wanted to get it done.
Has anyone ever done this? i.e. applied for thier number, have SS do a manual verification and still get a number issued by the local office once they show up on their system?

I have no idea, sorry Patrick, when I went to get mine they told me it would take 3 weeks, the card came in the mail 6 days later, what do they need to do a manual verification??

By all accounts if the name does't come up on their system they mail out the application to be verified and that is what takes the time.
As I said, the girl I questioned while applying said I could still call next week and that they could verify it again then and if it showed up they could still issue a receipt and then within about 24 hrs they assign a number.
Again I am wondering how true this is.

I think you should call them next week and keep calling them and if you're in the system then they'll assign a SSN to you
good luck!

An update to this problem, as per my other thread, having a manual verification started when you apply for a SSN due to not coming up on the SAVE system does not impact in any way further enquiries and the issuing of a SSN once you come up in the SAVE system. In fact a comment from Michael D Young on VisaJourney with regards to their SSN application FAQ, indicates that when you go to the SS office and you do not show up on the SAVE system, you should just go ahead and let them start a manual verification. as was stated, it in NO WAY impacts further enquiries and you will still get your SSN once your name comes onto the SAVE system.
Hope this helps someone else.
