My USC wife is just about to change her Social Security details in the
US to reflect her new married name. Now, she's a little hesitant to do
this as she's heard stories of friends and other people who have done
this having major problems getting credit, etc, due to the new
lastname.
Anyone here with experience of this?
TIA,
David.

It makes no difference about a name on the SS card because they go by the
number, not the name. They may match the name with the number, but if she
has credit problems now changing the SS last name will not improve or worsen
this.....the credit problems will stay the same. Just changing her last
name does not make her have credit problems if she has none.
Someone else may disagree but I think I am close to the right answer.

Thanks for the quick response. No, there are no credit problems now or
in the past - just friend-of-a-friend stories about having troubles
after getting changing to the married name.
Cheers!

Hi All!
Well I would suggest that she apply for the corrected SSN card to reflect
her married name. Unless she continues to work under her maiden name her
wages my not post to her SSA earnings record, although the employer isn't
supposed to file her W-2 under the new name until she shows them the SSN
card with the name change.

If you file income taxes jointly and use the married name, IRS could kick
it back. IRS verifies SSNs and names by matching them against SSA data.

Now as far as the credit goes, SSA doesn't not verify SSNs for credit
companies. If there is any question of your wife's name and SSN, she can
go into her local SSA office and request a SSN Verification Printout. The
Printout will show the SSN and the current name on that SSN record.
Three major credit reporting bureaus:
-- Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; or Internet: http://www.equifax.com
-- Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289; or Internet: http://www.tuc.com
-- Experian: 1-800-301-7195; or Internet: http://www.experian.com
You might want to give them a call and ask if there is anything your wife
needs to do to make sure they know your wife is the same person once she
changes her name.
Take care,
Mike :)
