hi all--
wondering what the difference between a sponsorship and a letter of invitation is, and if the letter of invitation carries the same amount of responsibility as sponsorship ie. responsibility for gov't benefits etc.
Dont know what id do w/out this board....its a godsend

I assume you are referring to a visitor's visa.
A letter of invitation is just that - a letter you write to the potential
visitor that describes what you are planning to do, who is going to pay
for it, etc.
Sponsorship doesn't technically exist for visitor visas at all. People use
it to describe various concepts. Sometimes, it means the same thing as a
letter of invitation. Sometimes, it refers to an affidavit of support. An
affidavit of support (on INS form I-134) is essentially a three-way
contract between you, the person who is visiting, and the US government.
In this contract, you promise that should the person require assistance
such as welfare or emergency medical care, you, rather than the US
government will pay for it.
As a general rule, unless the visitor is extremely poor, you should NEVER
use an affidavit of support. It is often a reason for a visitor visa to
get denied.
