Default So you DON'T need to tell anyone official of a divorce?

From what I can tell from researching on here, a Permanent Resident (has been for over 7 yrs) does not need to tell anyone offical about getting divorced. But they DO need to inform them of a change of address.

Is this correct?

Yes - I believe so - although I think that if a woman changes her name after divorce (goes back to using her maiden name) she would have to inform the Immigration Services about the name change - and I believe documentation has to be provided to back that up.

No, she doesn't have to. She might want to, but there's no obligation to.

Maybe not now - but what if she wants to renew her Green card or apply for citizenship and has a different last name (maiden name)? I believe then it is necessary to inform the Department of Homeland Security and I believe documentation has to be provided.

She would only need to follow the I-90 or N-400 instructions and include what is required. Her divorce decree would show how her name changed, and it won't be a problem getting the new document in her new name. In the meantime, she doesn't have to notify anyone.

What if she does? At that time she can simply use her maiden name and provide proof of the divorce. There's no obligation to inform DHS of a name change prior to applying for a benefit.

You believe incorrectly... because no, she doesn't. Her maiden name is *always* her legal name whether or not she chooses to assume any other name.

Thanks so much for the replies. I thought I must be missing something, but apparently not.
