Slightly OT: U.S. to unveil new citizenship questions
Just an FYI...
U.S. to unveil new citizenship questions
WASHINGTON - The government wants to make the citizenship test for immigrants more meaningful, requiring a better understanding of America's history and government institutions. No longer would it be sufficient to know the three branches of government (executive, legislative and judicial). Applicants could also be asked why there are three branches of government.
The government on Thursday was to unveil 144 draft questions that it plans to try out on immigrant applicants in 10 cities where it is testing a new citizenship exam. Citizenship and Immigration Services planned to post the questions on its Web site at noon Thursday.

Actually, there are several mistakes (or misleading answers) in the questions... for example:
#77 - non-US citizens can apply for federal jobs, although *usually* only USCs can accept one.
#77 - non-US citizens can run for office... it just depends on whether it's federal, state, or municipal.
#96 - schtupping a French bimbo!
#102 - the Hurons are a native Canadian tribe... in the US, they were known as the Wyandotte
#113 - *none* of those wars were fought in the US
#132 - how can there be 2 answers?

#113 -- also, all were AFTER the 1900's. Perhaps the insurrection in the Phillipines might count.

Hello Jeolua,
Firstly, I didn't say the information wouldn't be posted on USCIS's website until 12 noon. The author of the article I quoted wrote that. Plus, I posted a link to the article at 9.50am. I'm sorry you haven't mastered reading a clock yet.
Secondly, part of the naturalization process is passing an English test. I suggest you start studying now, I wouldn't want you to bomb it.

Hi Elaine,
> Okay, what about #76? I seem to remember some
> PR's got called for jury duty.
The two answers for #76 are usually interlinked: Where registering to
vote puts you in the jury pool (it also often takes care of #67 if
applicable too). While it is drummed in the head that voting is a citizen's
responsibility, voter registration is not mandatory. There are also U.S.
citizens that are not entitled to vote or serve on juries (felons, for
example).

Yes, but you shouldn't go!
Just saying "I'm not a citizen" is your "get out of jury duty free" card (at
least it is in California - maybe other states have different laws?)..
And, remember - misrepresenting yourself as a citizen is grounds for a
lifetime ban!
Makes me wonder what the penalty for misrepresenting oneself as a permanent
resident (when one actually is a citizen) is? That is, what if a FORMER PR
kept a photocopy of their 10-year greencard? With a potential of almost
9-years of overlap with its expiry date and getting citizenship, and sent
that in to the local office to say "I'm a PR - not eligible for jury duty"?
Probably not a good idea :-)
