Default Shelly/ead, aos

Shelly, I am sending this to you since you have been answering my question on
aos/ead/ and ssn. My question is that my fiance is a male coming from ENgland. I
think the order of processing all of these was so that once you have ssn card you
would not have to change your name to married if you are the female fiance coming to
the states. If you are the male coming over then the order in which all is done is no
necessary is it ? Or was there another reason for doing all of this first before
marriage....

Thanks in advance for the response.

Holly

I did post an answer to this before, I think. A K-1 visa holder, male or female is
eligible for a SSN BEFORE marriage, but not after. If the fiancé, male or female,
gets a 90 Day EAD stamp at the POE and he/she is planning to work before marriage,
then they must get an SSN in order to work. If the fiancé, male or female, does not
get a SSN before marriage, he/she is not eligible to get one until the AOS
paperwork is filed and an EAD card is received or he/she receives his/her Green
Card. It is a matter of personal choice to get your SS card before or after
marriage - depends on when the fiancé plans to start working, if one is required to
get a Drivers License in your State, if you need it for opening new bank accounts
and such. It doesn't matter if the fiancé is male or female or if you are going to
change your name after you are married or not. My husband and I figured all this
out the hard way - we got married a few days after he entered the US. He had to
wait 6 weeks until his EAD appointment to get his SSN, then get his new Drivers
License (he is a truck driver - so for us this was a really big thing), open a bank
account, finally get employment applications completed. Had he gotten his SSN
before we were married, he could have done all these things while waiting for his
EAD to process and started work the day he received his card instead of a week
later (believe me, after he spent the first six weeks of married life hanging
around the house alone while I was at work - well let's just say it was about 5
weeks too long. I hope this helps. Take Care. Shelley

Thanks so much SHelley. I know you get tired of some of these questions, but I really
try to research before I ask. I am usually just so tired at night after working all
day, and taking care of kids at night, to start reading every night. I am trying to
get AOS forms ready and it is a total nightmare. I am exhausted from all of this. So,
thanks again...Holly

Been there, done that - now we have Ken's Green Card! It always seems like you can't
get enough information, and there must be something you've forgotten to do or
complete. Try to relax - if I told you all the mistakes my husband and I made - some
kinda small, a few really big ones - you'd wonder how we got this far. Just wait
until January when I have to fill out the I-751. I'll probably get it all done
correctly, and we'll get called for an interview anyway (sigh). Take Care. Shelley
