Default Removal of Conditions - period of validity extension

This is for a friend (really! I'm suspicious of "for a friend" posts myself)
She adjusted status to LPR in Dec 2015 her Green Card I-551 had an expiration of Dec 2017, and timely applied for removal of conditions in 2017. She received the I-797 extending her status for 1 year, to Dec 2018.
While applying for a mortgage, the underwriter wanted stronger proof of her expiration date, so she took an InfoPass appointment at our local field office.
The USCIS officer stamped her passport with an I-551 stamp valid through May 2019, and took her green card. Basically the stamp is her current green card. This was enough to please the mortgage underwriter. By the way, the officer indicated her case was selected for interview and not in queue for scheduling yet.
One month after this, she receives a new I-797, granting an 18 month extension "from the expiration date on your I.551".
The question is, should she consider the extension to be 18 months from the original I-551 (the physical green card) which would be June 2019, or 18 months from the stamp's date, which would be November 2020? I believe the second date to be the correct one, especially in view of the fact her physical green card was taken away.

I would take the safe route and assume the earlier date.

I agree with civilservant.

Either way, she can still apply for citizenship when she's eligible.
