Default Re: Renewal of Permanent Resident Card (green card)

My husband and I have figured it out why I had only 2 year green card. We
found this page which explains everything to us:
http://k1.exit.com/751home.html.

We found the "courtesy notice" that came when INS informed us that my green
card had been issued ( I came here K-1). Its a 2 page notice and the second
page gives instructions for filing form I-751, printed extra large bold
type. This page tells us that "failure to apply for removal of the
conditions will result in automatic termination of your lawful status in the
United States." Then it lists the dates for filing Form I-751, which passed
almost 3 weeks ago.

HOLY S**T!!! Does it really say automatic termination?

OK .... Please tell me there is no reason to freak out right now
because, frankly, I am freaking out.

Seriously, has anyone had to go into their district office and grovel for
forgiveness just for simply missing a date? I am a mother, wife and full
time worker. How should I approach these people with this situation?

Thanx very much

Check to dates, I think the date they give you in the letter is the date you can apply, which I beleive is 3 months prior to the expiration of LPR status. Hopefully your Card has not yet expired and you can file straight away, before the expiration date

There is no reason to freak out. Yes, the GC did expire, and you are
currently an illegal immigrant. You should be able to apply for adjustment
of status and get a completely new GC now. I would strongly recommend you
hire a lawyer.

The only long-term consequence is that if you plan to get naturalized,
then your wait will start over when you get your new Green Card.

Grovel for forgiveness won't help, and will probably make matters worse -
they would have to arrest you and deport you. Instead, hire a lawyer to
straighten it out.
