Default Random Visits from INS?

Hey Folks,

My neighbor told me that the other day someone from INS was lurking
outside our doorway in an effort to verify mine and my wife's
residence. Our neighbor (who we don't really know) was asked if she
knew us and she simply told the officer that there was a young couple
living there, at which point the officer asked to see her (my
neighbor's) papers!!

Is this a new tack being used by the government: random checks and
visits on green card applicants? Our lawyer said they might come back
and I'm a bit concerned that they'll keep coming every time we're not
home which may further delay my wife's case- we've already been waiting
almost a year for an answer on her Green Card and the suspense is just
eating her up.

Has anyone else gone through this?

You have an attorney and he answered your question for you. It is not unusual for USCIS to pay a visit nor is it unusual as someone posted last week for them to call you at home. Will they return again? No one can tell you that as we don't know why they are interested in verifying your home address and living arrangements.

Surprised they would ask your neighbor for her status papers. Wonder if they were investigating you or her.

If it was INS they must have used a Tardis.

Hi:

You now know what happened to you case -- it was sent to investigations. Almost by definition, your case has now been delayed since it has left adjudications. It won't be adjudicated until it goes back. Don't be surprised if they turn up at the crack of dawn or one evening in the course of the "bed check."

You don't describe your case, but I wonder why it was sent to investigations. If everything is OK, the law says that weight of the evidence will govern your case. Note that I said the "law" -- your case will be adjudicated by the Department of Homeland Security.

Ok, you've piqued my interest. How do you know that "Almost by
definition, your case has now been delayed since it has left
adjudications"? I guess you know something I don't.

Here's our situation: my wife (who is the applicant) and I had our
interview in January 2006 in Chicago. The interview went without
incident except for one bizarre twist (which I'll explain later). We
had all our papers in order, probably almost two dozen documents
showing shared residence, finances, and other coupled ventures. They
told us they'd send us an answer within 90 days, 90 days turned into 3
additional months which later became September 2006 and now the latest
deadline we've been offered is April of this year. I can't really
fathom why the delay keeps getting extended (my wife's fingerprints and
work id were confirmed without delay after the interview). I'm
beginning to suspect that they might think that I, an American of
Middle Eastern descent, is part of some secret Islamic Terrorism ring.
I may just be paranoid, but I can't come up with any other explanation.

Ok, here's the weird twist that happened during our interview. The
same day we were scheduled to meet with the officer, another
acquanitance of ours (let's call her "Irina") who shares our lawyer was
also scheduled for her interview. She and her husband went in before
us, they were separated during the interview and later we found out
that the officer was screaming at the couple and "Irina" left in tears
. . . now, nothing of that sort happened during our interview, with the
newbie officer asking us surpsisingly few questions about each other or
our marriage. What she did focus on was "Irina". She asked my wife
how she knew "Irina", whether "Irina" was married and if she knew her
husband, where "Irina" lived, etc. I'd say that almost half our
interview was about "Irina". Our lawyer interjected, but my wife and I
left with a dubious feeling about why so much focus was spent on
another case that we have nothing to do with. Is this even legal? Our
lawyer filed a complaint against the officer, but that seems to have
done little to speed things up.

Now, here's another weird twist: our lawyer told us that he thought
we'd get our approval quickly and that "Irina" would likely be
rejected. Last month, we found out that "Irina" in fact received her
green card and we're still waiting!!!

Comments? Suggestions? Anybody else in the same boat?
