Default Question about passport stamp I-551

The I-551 stamp on my passport expires on November 29th, 2002.
According to INS, my green card production was ordered but I have not
received yet.
I have to travel abroad on December 14th.
Should I get the new stamp ON November 29th or can I choose any date before
my departure?
I would think it is not important when I do it, but INS logic is hard for me
to understand....
Any help?

Thanks

Sandro

You should get the new stamp before the old one expires. You are required
to always have evidence of your current status, so after November 29, you
would not have any (this would be a minor violation, but in the age of
Ashcroft locking up people for not reporting a change of address, you may
not want to take a chance).

You can get a new stamp, before the expiration date. As INS has ordered you card, it may be advisable to take a copy of your airline ticket, as prove you are travelling very soon, and cannot wait for the card to arrive
