Question about entering on K-1 visa and not obtaining a Green Card

I think it's a great idea to get it now, while you can (as a K-1). As noted, you can use it for your STB wife's income tax return (there could be a real benefit for her, and she can always file married-separate if you don't want to report your income). And, I think the credit card idea is brilliant. STB wife will want to keep some ties to the US active--voting, banking etc, and you being on a credit card account with her will pay off big for you when you move to the US.

Following the advice you've all given me, I will obtain an SS number and will look into getting added to my STB wife's credit card, bank account, etc.
Many thanks for all the help and advice.

Would definitely make it easier to work from day one if they returned to the US to live. No waiting around for the issuance of a social security number. It is a matter of no harm, no foul.
True, although at the time they file a joint tax return, they can request a TIN number for him at that time.
The credit card idea is a good one, just depends how much time they want to spend in the USA before heading back to the UK. He shouldn't apply for the SS number until he's been in the USA for about 10 days, and then it takes 2 weeks to arrive in the mail, then he has to apply for the secured credit card, wait for that to arrive in the mail, etc.)
