Default Question about Consulate respone

I sent a letter to the consulate in Guangzhou asking about the I-134 and
received this reply:

"K-3 petitioners should prepare the I-134 Affidavit of Support, which they
can get from their
local CIS office or on the CIS website, www.immigration.gov. However, it is
not a required document as long as applicants can demonstrate at the
interview that she/he will not become a public charge in the States. Please
log on the same website for details."

So now I'm really curious - how could one demonstrate that you won't become
a public charge.... without using an I-134?

My main concern is I'm working through a temp agency while trying to find
permanent work. The hours vary so I can't really put down how much I'm
supposed to make in a year.

Any thoughts?

I didn't use the I-134. You have to prove enough in assets or an income to satisty the consulate. The amount in assets and income varies according to the consulate.

Do you mind if I ask what you used? Did you just send a signed letter to
the consulate? What kind of information did you give them? Total yearly
salary or your hourly pay or something else?

Sorry for all the questions and I appreciate your time.

Are you the US citizen or the foreign spouse?

Strangely in 1998 the US Consulate in Montreal would not allow my husband to use his income in place of the I-134. He had a $36,000 annual pension and a condo but still they wanted my I-134.

It really does seem to vary widely from consulate to consulate. And don't get me started on why we can't self sponser when we're here!

To the OP. I had a cert from my bank in Spain and one offshore showing total balance, length of time I'd had the accounts and explanation for the Spanish account of a large deposit which was from a house sale.

For my monthly income I have a special cert that goes with it so I took that along. It's a tax free income so I didn't have to show any P60's (the tax year end statement in England)

That was for Madrid and was accepted without problem. Your own consulate may be different, so check with them.
