Default Please Help ME....

Hi! Thank you for reading! I have a question and I hope someone here can help me. Ok, I'm french but I live in the USA....I have my social security number and my VISA (Permanent Resident Card IR2) and in 3 years I'll get my American Passport (citizenship). Me and my girlfriend (she is from Colombia) are thinking about marriage. I was told that once we marry, I might have chances to give her a Social Security Number and a Visa, just like me. Is that true? Don't you need to be a citizen in order to give your wife social and visa, or you only need to be a permanent resident? your help would be really appreciated...thanx!!!!

You don't give her anything. You petition for her green card and after she
gets it, she can apply for an SSN.

Well, she can get a SSN even before she gets her green card; to get a SSN,
she needs to apply to the Social Security Administration; for GC, you
petition INS on her behalf. Before the GC is approved, her SS card will say
"not allowed to work in the U.S." After the GC is approved, she can go to a
SS Admin office and get the condition removed. Let me point out another
thing that's important - as a permanent resident petitioning for your wife,
there may be a long wait (several years) before your wife gets the GC. You
might want to check out the waiting time at www.ins.gov. Good luck,

Hmm, the Social Security Administration doesn't give out SSNs anymore unless
they are really needed. They have stopped issuing the "not allowed to work"
variety quite some time ago.
They also stopped giving out SSN solely for DMV purposes (AFAIK, there was
a court ruling against that recently, I don't know how that's going to affect
this).

Family category 2a currently has a 5-year backlog. See the Visa Bulletin
at http://travel.state.gov/visa_bulletin.html

I apologize - I was not aware the rules have changed - I was referring to my
own situation a few years back where I had a SSN for several years as an F-1
student well before I got a green card. In fact I came to the US on a
student visa with a teaching asistantship and the University was able to
obtain a SSN for me upon my arrival. Anyway, thanks for the update,
