Why would you bother? Other than no-frills airlines such as Southwest and Easyjet
most airlines charge the same or less for a round trip ticket, so you can simply
throw away the second half of your fiance's ticket.
A few hints..
1. For better pricing include a Saturday night stay on both tickets
2. You dont say in which country your fiance lives, but in UK tickets bought from
consolidators are often significantly cheaper than buying direct from an airline.
3. Look at <http://www.britsintheus.com/>
and click on Travel Discounters in the menu.
4. If you intend using a credit card to pay for your fiance's ticket, some sites will
not accept a foreign issued credit card.
5. Usually the later you buy the tickets the higher the price.
Pity you didnt state which airports you were intending travelling to and from and
the dates.

I'm sure you can. KLM, Continental, Lufthansa and Swiss (I believe) offer one-way
tickets at 60% of the return fare. You might find it's better to get a yearly
return. Set the date wherever you want - if you think they might ask to see it at
Customs/wherever you can always have the date booked for 3 months. You can often
change the return date for free, or a small charge.
This way you get flexibility. And you're probably going to be visiting people in
the UK at some point anyway... While you're in the US, check prices of return
flights there, then you can decide whether to buy another UK-US-UK return, or
whether it's cheaper/better to buy a one-way back to the US and use US-UK-US returns
from there on.

Southwest (don't know about easy jet) doesn't fly internationally, and it DOES have
one ways fares that are MUCH cheaper than roundtrips.
As someone else mentioned, there are several major carriers that offer lower
priced one way tickets to the US. They cost significantly less than discounted
economy return.

Well duh.. which is why I said "Other than"

Taken from the various airline sites using London/Chicago and Sep 1st as examples,
taxes included -
CO LGW to ORD via EWR $653.91 round trip ** best buy on this basis
$855.21 one way
KLM LGW to ORD via DTW $827.55 round trip (code share on NWA)
$808.80 one way
NW LGW to ORD via DTW $915.91 round trip $837.71 one way
LH LHR to ORD via FRA $1140.60 round trip $828.75 one way
Now, using the same examples *but via a consolidator* -
NW LGW to ORD $522.85 round trip ** best buy on this basis AA LHR to ORD
$566.20 round trip UA LHR to ORD $581.20 round trip CO LGW to ORD $611.85 round
trip LH LHR to ORD $683.95 round trip
US LGW to ORD $544.50 one way CO LGW to ORD $558.00 one way
1) the above are not non-stop except UA and AA
2) seat availability not checked
3) better prices available, especially if booking further ahead
Hilary, being a travel agent, could no doubt find better pricing. But as just an
ordinary user, its fairly clear that whether one searches via the airline sites or
consolidator sites that round trip pricing can be cheaper within the arbitrary
examples I selected.

Mickey flew from Belfast City airport to Detroit last month. He bought a one-way
ticket that was about $300 less than a round-trip one.
Take care,

I don't know if this will help or not. I travelled from Canada to the U.S. to marry
my fiance. Moneywise I was told by my travel agent that it was cheaper to purchase a
two way plane ticket so that is what I
did. We have no idea why it is cheaper to do it this way.
