Owning property in India while becoming US citizen.
I am currently a citizen of India, but I am in the process of becoming
a naturalized US citizen soon. Currently I own some property in my name
back in India, but after I become a US citizen, and if I have to
renounce my Indian Passport, can I still maintain the property in my
name? Would I face problems when I try to sell the property ?
Any comments would be highly appreciated.
thanx,
--binu.

There are very few things in US law that affect foreign property ownership.
If it was in an embargoed country such as Cuba, there certainly would be a
problem. If this property was somehow related to the Indian military, there
could also be a problem because of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Short of that, I can't really think of anything.
There may be tax issues if you made a profit on the property.
Of course, I do not know how India handles property ownership by non-Indian
citizens.
