Options for a tourist engaged, but not yet married to, an American?
Hopefully someone can help me with my current situation:
1. I am a Canadian citizen.
2. Until the end of January I worked in the U.S. under an H1-B. I was laid off. I
then (legally) changed my status to B-2 (tourist).
3. I am currently engaged to an American, we were planning to get married next year.
My question(s):
4. Is there a way for me to stay in the U.S. and look for work while we are
only engaged?
5. If we decide to get married "earlier", could we simply get married while I
am here as a tourist, or is it necessary for me to leave and return under
a K-1 Visa?
6. How long, after one is married, does it typically take to get a work permit?
I realize that my life seems to be turning into the plot of countless sit-coms and
movies, but any help would be sincerely appreciated.
