Next steps...

Hi everyone

I have my K1 visa interview in 2 weeks, and I'm planning on leaving the UK at some point during the first week of September.

Just a few questions:

1. We're getting married October 15th, after which we'll have to file for AOS. Does filing for AOS automatically include filing for the advance parole document? (I-131 I think). I'm not planning on leaving the US at any point this year, probably not until next summer in fact, but I'd like to be able to leave if necessary (e.g. if there's a family emergency, that kind of thing) without abandoning the visa process! (I'd hate to have to go through all this again! lol).

2. When will I be eligible to open a bank account? Do I need a SSN first?

3. What should I do about medical insurance for the 5-6 weeks before we're married? I was planning on getting travel insurance to cover this period - does anyone know if that's OK? (once we're married I will be added to my other half's medical insurance policy).

4. For AOS I assume we need proof of ongoing relationship - I'll be on the lease for the house, the bills, his medical insurance, we'll have our wedding photos etc. Am I on the right lines? I know I'm getting a bit ahead of myself - sorry!

Thanks in advance! :)

Make sure this date is flexible, just in case. You never know what could delay your visa or your arrival in the USA.

Filing AOS doesn't automatically include filing for AP, you need to submit form I-131 in order to get AP in hand. There is no separate fee for the I-131 when you include it with your AOS package.

This is bank-specific. Some banks will require you to have a SSN first, some won't. They aren't *supposed* to, unless you open an interest-bearing account. It should be fine to add your name to your spouse's existing account, though. The bank does not need your SSN for that.

You've got the right idea. You won't need to present any of this until you appear for your AOS interview, but it's good that you know know what evidence to start collecting!

Thanks for your quick reply!

I haven't booked flights yet, I know that there can be a delay in getting your passport back with the visa in it and who knows what else could go wrong... (yep, I'm a pessimist! or, a realist as I prefer to say!!)

We can change the wedding date if we have to, hopefully we won't need to though!

Thanks again :)
