Our 130 was approved on March 4, and we were told that we could now file
the I-485 by the lady in our congressman's office.....my husband is here
and has been in the states for one year...and tomorrow is our wedding
anniversary .....two whole wonderful years.........but when
we got the receipt back on the approval of the
130 it said it had been sent to National Visa Center....I called there
and we have been
assigned another number and we would hear
from them in about 6 weeks.....what is the
purpose of sending it there and what can
we expect to hear...he has his work visa and I do know that we have to
renew that in December and I am so confused....please help me

Brenda,
The 'normal' process for an approved I-130 is for the service center to send it to the NVC, the NVC sends you, the petitioner, some instructions and forms, you respond, the package goes to the consulate in your husband's country, and he applies for an immigrant visa to come to the USA. This was the only process prior to the creation of the K3 visa.
You don't say so, but your post hints that your husband entered the US on a K3 (or some other non-immigrant visa?) and his intention is to adjust status? If so, and he doesn't want to go the route of returning briefly to his contry to obtain the immigrant visa, you need to inform the NVC of his intention.

We are trying to decide whether he should pursue the K3 or if we should wait for the CR1 to finish its processing. We have no idea how long the CR1 processing will take, as I haven't really been able to find any timelines regarding this.

Kim,
My husband came to the US on a CR-1 visa. Vermont approved my I-130 petition at the end of May 2003, and my husband's consulate interview was in December 2003.
NVC processing for the CR-1 visa takes longer than the processing for the K visas. One of the reasons that there is so much time between I-130 approval and the interview in my husband's case is that our lawyer did not send the NVC exactly what it requested (sent photocopies of certain documents rather than the originals or issuing-entity certified copies). That held us up about 6-8 weeks.
On the up side, my husband's green card arrived in the mail less than three weeks after he arrived in the US.
Hope this helps you.

Katie-
Thank you for the info! I had hoped it wouldn't take *that* long to complete. What country is your husband from, if you don't mind me asking?
