hi all

can someone out there please advise the steps towards having one's name changed due to marriage? how long would it take? how much will it cost? where to change name?

as my wife has just received her AP and will be travelling next month, would the new name affect her international passport and international air ticket both of which are in her maiden name?

I used my AP with my married name with a passport having my maiden name.

To change the name, you just need to go to the DMV/Secretary of State with your marriage license, and her IDs and ask for them to change her name. The fee for me was the price of a new driver's license.

I did not change my passport until way later (14 months when my passport was about to expire) because, in France, you never loose your maiden name, your married name gets added and your passport reads: maidenName married marriedName, and I had already registered my marriage with the Consulate, so they knew I was married.

So, I would think that she will be OK with an AP in her maiden name and IDs in her married name (maybe she might even be able to keep her passport in her maiden name to simplify things?). Just make sure she ALWAYS carries a marriage certificate with her...

She doesn't have to change her name, and I would reocmmend not using her
new name for tickets, etc until she has the documentation in her new
name. Otherwise, she can travel with a copy of her marriage license, but
it is best to have tickets matching the name on the passport and green
card or other INS documentation.

She should wait until after the trip, and then start changing things.
For her passport, she might require an apostille of her marriage
certficate and the certificate itself. The apostille is normally done by
the state's Secretary of State, but this may vary. An apostille is, by
international treaty, used by one government to certify to a foreign
government that the document is genuine.

We are due to sign an Act of Sale for our new house later this month. It is our matrimonial home. Should she use her maiden name or intended married name on the title deed/mortgage paper? note that her married name is not yet changed?

What do you mean "her married name is not yet changed".
In every state that I am aware of, she is free to use the name as the
legal one without any further documentation past her marriage
certificate. The marriage certificate is generally the legal
documentation of the name change. She doesn't have to use the name, but
the certificate legitimizes the name if she wishes to use it
"officially". What name you put on the deed/mortgage is a personal
choice.
