Default a month after applying for SSN, still nothing in the mail....

I applied for a SSN a month ago, but to this day, I am yet to get the card. I called the SSA Office (Bridgeport, CT) last week, they said My name didnt show up in the Save system. I've been in tyeh US for close to 4 months now! I 2 Job Interviews lined up for the next 2 weeks, now it seems I wont be given a fair chance with those jobs, since I have no SSN.

I went in person and applied. The card came one week later. The same thing happened when I applied for a replacement card without the "valid for work wiht INS authorization" bit on it.

Go in person. Show the employer the letter they give you showing you have applied. That is supposed to be acceptable proof.

The SSO gives you a letter stating your name, that you have applied etc. I received one without asking on both occasions. Ask for a letter if you did not receive one first time.

(grin) I have NO idea if it has an offical status. I was told that I could show it to ppl if I was required to show a SSN. I was asking in connection with a licensing issue. It was fine.

I suggest that you go back into the SSA office where you applied with
your documents. First ask if an SSN was assigned. Then make sure you
have an application pending and if yes ask them to query SAVE. If SAVE
doesn't do it, ask if a G-845 has previously be sent for manual
verification. If yes have they received a reply. If no did they followed
up or sent another. Then keep going back in every two weeks. Squeaky
wheel gets the oil.

26CFR31.6011(b)-2 TITLE 26--INTERNAL REVENUE PART 31--EMPLOYMENT TAXES AND
COLLECTION OF INCOME TAX AT SOURCE--Table of Contents Subpart
G--Administrative Provisions of Special Application to Employment Taxes
(Selected Provisions of Subtitle Sec. 31.6011(b)-2 Employees' account
numbers.

(ii) On or after November 1, 1962. Every employee who on any day after
October 31, 1962, is in employment for wages which are subject to the taxes
imposed by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act or which are subject to
the withholding of income tax from wages under section 3402 but who prior to
such day has neither secured an account number nor made application
therefore, shall make an application on Form SS-5 for an account number.

(iii) Employee who has receipt acknowledging application. If the employee
does not have an account number card but has available a receipt issued to
him by an office of the Social Security Administration acknowledging that an
application for an account number has been received, the employee shall show
such receipt to the employer.

(2) Additional information to be furnished by employee to employer. Every
employee who, on the day on which he is required to comply with paragraph
(b)(1)(i), (ii), (iii), or (iv) of this section, has an account number card
but for any reason does not show such card to the employer on such day shall
promptly thereafter show the card to the employer. An employee who does not
have an account number card on such day shall, upon receipt of an account
number card from the Social Security Administration, promptly show such card
to the employer, if he is still in the employ of that employer.

SSA offices can assist an individual awaiting his or her SSN card by the
following methods:

-- Issuing a notice acknowledging the individual's SSN application while his
or her documents are being verified;

-- Providing upon request, a copy of the individual's UNCERTIFIED SSN
application;

-- Notifying the individual of the SSN assigned, once it has been issued,
before the SSN card is received in the mail; and

-- Sending an SSA-7028, Notice to Third Party of Social Security Number
Assignments, to the individual's employer or other
interested third party once an SSN has been assigned.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this is where IRS/SSA terminology might be at odds. IRS says you only
need a receipt from SSA that you applied, but what SSA calls a receipt is
only issued when you will be assigned an SSN. As shown above SSA can issue
a notice acknowledging the person has applied for an SSN, but this doesn't
guarantee one will be assigned.

RM 00202.307 Acknowledgment for Form SS-5

A. INTRODUCTION

The Direct Online Correspondence System (DOCS) contains language field
offices (FO) can use when an individual insists on a written acknowledgment
that he/she requested an SSN card but the FO is not authorized to issue a
receipt.

B. BACKGROUND

FOs are not authorized to issue a receipt to an individual who has requested
an SSN card unless SSA will also issue the
individual the card

RM 00202.305 Receipts for Form SS-5

A. INTRODUCTION

A receipt form confirms not only that the individual applied for an SSN card
but also that a card will be issued. Therefore, be
certain that all requirements to obtain a card are met and a card will be
issued before providing a receipt.

B. KINDS OF RECEIPTS

There are several kinds of receipts, either paper or system generated, that
are issued based on the type of card the applicant
will receive.

-- Form SSA-5028 (Receipt for Application for a Social Security Card) is to
be issued to applicants who are allowed to work
in the U.S.. The card will have no legend.

-- Form SSA-5029 (Receipt for Application for a Nonwork Social Security
Card) is to be issued to applicants who are not
allowed to work in the U.S. The card will have the legend “NOT VALID FOR
EMPLOYMENT.

-- Form SSA-5030 (Receipt for Application for a Social Security Card) is to
be issued to applicants who are allowed to work
only with authorization from INS. The card will have the legend “VALID
FOR WORK WITH INS AUTHORIZATION.

-- The system generated Application Receipt Form issued in the Interview
mode with language similar to that on the three
paper forms described above.

I am baffled by all of these problems I keep hearing about from the
SSA. It was so simple for us. They said it would be here in 10 days,
and it arrived in half that time. We went in person and only had to
show her birth certificate and passport with i-94.
