Actually you are in the right place to open a US-based bank account (London). There are branches of Wells Fargo and Wachovia in London, both of which (so I am told) will let you open US-based accounts, as long as you take the correct identification into their London branch. Take the missus with her US passport and you should be good to go.

Give them a call and see what they say.
