I'm sorry. The remainder of this post is quite amusing but this line had me laughing out loud.

A K1 visa does NOT take "a few days." You can talk to anyone who has been going through this process recently to see that. Even through Vermont, which had been processing I-129f petitions in under two weeks is taking their time now. And then after that you have to deal with the consulate and possible administrative reviews and....

Sorry - "a few days" is a bit off the mark.

Actually if you want to be technical about it, in most cases the K1 is issued the same day you interview for it. It is the entire process that takes months.

- Well if you are going to smoke illegal narcotics, you should not be
coming to America.

The current wait for K1 out of Vermont is only a week !

The USC is in a position of being taken advantage of and everyone
knows this. Americans are the kindest most generous people in the
world and many many people take advantage of us because of that. That
is not just an opinion, it is a fact. The USC has a lot to lose if he
gets victimized. He can go to jail if suspected part of a fraud. He
is on the hook for suporting the immigrant for the rest of his life.
The immigrants risks nothing. The immigrant is being given freedom
and a life to escape wherever they came from. No one is marrying a
Russian or a Philipino or an Estonian to get to live there are they ?
The USC is at risk and could have their lives destroyed. If someone
is sincere, they will understand and take steps necessary to prevent
that from ever happening. What harm is there if the USC held onto the
papers and pictures in a safe vault ? Some porno pics as blackmail
and her families address is a good idea as well. And a prenup should
always be done regardless of nationality. Don't mess with U.S. !

"Trust but Verify" - Ronald Reagan

"I have signed legislation outlawing Russia forever, we begin
bombing in 5 minutes" - Ronald Reagan

"Tear down this wall" - Ronald Reagan
Just a short note on this... I've never met as many illegal narcotics users anywhere as here in the States. Besides I think the poster was being sarcastic.

Also it is not just the USC who are being exploited and taken advantage of. This is a pure generalization. Just like saying that Americans are the kindest people on earth. There are kind people all over the world, as much as assholes.
On an additional note, me and my husband would probably both choose to build a life in Slovenia, but due to our circumstances we decided to live in the U.S. for now (he has an established career and I am just out of college).
I am not complaining here at all, I'm just saying that your generalization of immigrants coming to the U.S. to marry is out of line.

True true Rete. And so that I don't mislead the original poster
(since I think we have a consensus at this point that Michael's
information is simply wrong and that his opinions are a bit, umm,
unconventional), while my wife did get her visa the same day she
applied for it going the DCF route, the entire process for us took
about 3 months. It could have taken less, but my wife was also
planning our wedding at the same time . It was a busy 3 months for
her.
We were very impressed with the effeciency of the US Consulate in
Sydney.

Why do you feel it necessary to insult people like this. At this point,
I am considering a move to my wife's home country at a later date.
Millions of people are happy to live in Slovenia.

There is paperwork involved. It's the spousal visa unless you do direct consular filing and even that can take 4 weeks or more.
What is direct consular filing?

Hi Ambie -

Some US Consulates (notably London, Oz and Holland) allow US citizens to file a spousal petition (I-130) directly to that Consulate thus eliminating most of the tedious mucking-about with the US-based service centres. I can't comment on Oz and Holland but the London Consulate requires the US citizen to be permanently resident in the UK (and have the requisite stamp in their passport.)

The UK partner is then invited to submit the necessary documentation and attend for an interview, the successful outcome of which generates an IR-1 visa which has the supreme added benefit of 1) being a green card and 2) grants the holder conditional permanent residence of the USA. Thus eliminating even more tedious mucking about with adjusting status...

(I explained this earlier in my reply to you and quiller.)

Cheers - Tim

My point was - no place on Earth is perfect and neither are the US. But you obviously didn't get it. You further more prove how closedminded you are.
Once you travel the world you have a better understanding of the values that constitute a perfect home for you and your family. Believe me, I know quite a few Americans who live happily in Slovenia (and many other countries) right now, but they obviously have no reason to discuss on this forum.

P.S. Walls are only to be knocked down where there are walls.
