married soon on non-immigrant (E3) visa
Hi,
I am about to get married to a US citizen in a months time and have
already got the marriage licence. I arrived from Australia on a
non-immigrant E3 visa. I am wondering if I need to see a lawyer to apply
for a change of status? Is this a simple process?
I also heard something about me not being able to leave the US after
changing status. Is this true? Is there something else I can apply for
to get around this?
Thanks for your help,
Brett.

You could have an initial conculatation with a lawyer.
You could just do it yourself.
Advanced Parole.

1. Seeing a lawyer is up to you.
2. Simple? Some people think so. One court of appeals called immigration law a "never never land where plain words don't always mean what they say."
3/4. You can leave after completion of the adjustment of status, no problem. I'm assuming you read something about travel while the application is pending. You are free to travel, but if you don't obtain "advance parole" first, the adjustment application is considered abandoned.

Check out www.visajourney.com. Lots of good info about the process there.
