Default marriage and taxes

I am a foreigner getting ready to marry an american citizen. As we plan to
eventually settle in the USA, I am worried about bringing my sizeable assets
( and eventually my parents assets) into the US tax system where it will
eventually get eaten up by the inheritence tax. Are there any ways around
this? Can I just live with my husband in the USA and not become a citizen?

I am even considering to not move to the USA.

If you come to the states, becoming a legal permanent resident, you'll have to pay taxes and world wide income regardless of being a citizen, but if in the UK and I'm sure a lot of other countries that have a tax treaty of some sort, if your paying taxes there, then you would only pay taxes to the US if they were higher, or to that effect.

The US seems to be doing away with Inheritance tax.

Now that seems unlikely in the UK.

I do not know what happens when your assets are split betwen the 2 countries.

You don't have to become a citizen if you don't want to - you can remain a permanent resident and have the right to live and work in the US without being a citizen. Of course you will not be able to vote, will have to renew your green card every ten years, and if you commit a crime, you will most likely be deported when your sentence is finished.

Permanent residents are generally taxed the exact same way as US citizens. I would assume this applies to inheritance tax as well, but you should check with a CPA.

I forgot to mention the alternative strategy

Go SKI'ing

(Spending the Kids Inheritance)

That's what my Mother is going to do. The only thing currently holding her back is my Father.

Consult with an advisor familiar with US tax law. You are unlikely to
find a satisfactory answer here
