Default Marriage How to: step by step filing procedures...

Hi, I'd like to know what are the requirements and procedures to get
married? Where to file? where the marriage would take place if not
religious? City hall? Thank you.

So you expect other people to do the donkey work for you? How about searching the web yourself.

Alan,

What you ask depends on where you will get married. If within the US it will depend on which state and perhaps even on which county within the state.

Check out http://www.visajourney.com/faq/k1faq.htm for all info about marrying your foreign fiance in the US or outside the US. It will give you the info on the steps you need to take in order to get your foreign significant other into the US legally.

First, you start out with a man and a woman (gay couples don't get
immigration benefits yet). Then you buy a marriage license and get that
done. After that comes the business with the birds and the bees ... you
might be in the wrong newgroup if you need help with that! At this point
the nightmare of adjusting your status starts. :P

Most questions can be answered at http://uscis.gov/graphics/index.htm
... www.visajourney.com is also usefull (but unofficial).

In light of Mass. recently allowing same sex marriages, I wonder if the
Justice department can object (well I'm sure they CAN object but can a same
sex couple fight it and win?)

I certainly hope one day they can.

I just heard a horrible story first hand about a gay couple who committed visa fraud because they wanted to be together and they got caught because thier person who helped em turned themself in. now one of 'ems in prison probably will be banned forever and deported...do not pass go...etc
everyone else is free except the immigrant.
hey I don't agree with breaking the law but there should be some immigration recourse for same sex unions in my book, like the conjugal partner deal in canada (althought I've heard there's confusion about this one too lately).
anyone who argues that same sex couple have the same rights as married need only look to immigration benefits and know theres something wrong.

Andrew,

You wonder if the [US?] Department of Justice can object to what?

The new Massachusetts law regarding gay marriage?

In most states you must be at least 18 to get married without parental consent. In Kentucky you can get married at 14 with parental consent. In most states you can't marry your first cousin, although a lot of that seems to happen in this neck of the woods - which makes for amusing Sunday drives. You can get marriage license information at city hall or your county clerk's office. The marriage can take place anywhere as long as the person officiating is duly authorized to perform marriages. Hope this helps.
