Default Marriage the best way to get a US visa?

This is going to sound cheeky but is getting married a good way to get a US visa?

That sounds bad, I moved to australia and settled here because I didnt think I could get through the US visa process and it seems to have got even more difficult. I dont have a university degree for a start. I am in IT work which isnt a specialist occupation or anything I believe.

So I was wondering if marriage would be a good way to get into the country, perhaps using a dating site or a holiday there to find someone. What do people think?

Hi Dave,

Marriage IS the easiest way into the USA. It doesn't matter how you meet your potential wife....either on the internet or in person...BUT the marriage must be genuine and cannot be for immigration purposes only.

d,

Yes, it does sound cheeky.

Getting married so as to immigrate to the USA is grounds for denial of the visa application, so getting married is a very poor way to get a US visa.

Australia is....a bit backward. Imagine what the world was like in 1985 and thats pretty much Australia with a few modern day features bolted on but not really integrated. Its hard to describe but the first few months here you get the impression of having traveled back in time. After nearly 3 years here its starting to get to me now.

FWIW, you might find America "backward" too... there are some expats who do, compared with the centuries of history and culture in Europe. (I'm American so I don't know what I'm missing.)

Just make sure you don't jump out of the frying pan into the fire, and if possible, get your Oz citizenship before you leave.

I'm inclined to agree with Snowbunny to a degree - America doesnt seem exactly "backward" but there IS a completely different culture, lifestyle, environment and social structure to get used to.

Bars here are NOTHING like either Australia or the UK, the number of clapped out cars on the road boggles the mind, 99% of motorcycles seem to be a stereotypical Harley. Healthcare is unbelievably expensive but generally of a high standard if you have insurance, TV is dire, so bad in fact we now stream BBC / ITV from my wee server back in the UK. Internet access is cheap and good Petrol is cheap but full of bizarre additives, religion is everywhere, food tends to be good, if expensive, but you'll never find decent bacon!

It's not all bad though, the roads are very well signed and navigable but the surface is on a par with the UK - no escaping pot holes here. There's some absolutely GORGEOUS scenery, the people genuinely are friendly, there are some lovely local brews, there is a genuine variety in visiting different states and it's generally not a bad place to be

Just my two new pence worth

d,

I don't have to imagine. I was alive then, a fully grown adult, and I'm not particularly old now.

Where in Australia are you?

Outside of the major cities here the culture is similar to what you describe in Australia, if you're out in suburbia here I'm not sure you'll find it that different to suburban Australia.

No offence intended but i would feel extreme pitty for the poor USC you marry. If they find these post's then they will forever believe you married them for a Visa rather than for Love. But to answer your question, yes the easiest way is to marriage but as people have said if it aint legit the Immigration Officer will be able to tell.

Good Luck

You think the USA is different? Cellphone technology is years behind Europe and banking here is in the dark ages. Some things are good and some are not...I guess the grass is always greener, huh?

At least you have 'free' healthcare over there.....
