I am a non-American about to marry a a US citizen. I am wondering what forms do I
need to fill out, and what certificates I need to have before I receive a work
permit. I am not even entirely certain what federal agency I should be dealing
with. As my fiance is expecting on Nov 11th, it is important that I avail of a work
permit asap, to help support my family. It is the work permit, rather than
naturalisation, or green card, or whatever else I am entitled to, that is most
pressing. Thanks for the help.

You should file for adjustment of status after you have a certified copy of the
marriage certificate. See the "tourist adjustment" link of the Doc Steen site, it has
info you can use in the forms to file section. How quickly you get a work permit
depends on the local INS office where you will be filing...you can find experiences
of others posted here (pan down to I-130 section): http://www.kamya.com/aos/

I am not a lawyer and this is not immigration advice. This is my personal opinion,
