Question: Will my husband need to get the medical beforehand for a K-3 visa or
will he just need to wait for the embassy to notify him and then tell him
when/where to go? Also, what will the approximate cost for the physical be?

Medical exam is one of the required documents he needs to bring to the interview, so yeah he needs to get it BEFORE he goes to his interview, In London you have the medical exam the same day of the interview

The cost of the medical exam is £125, and once its done you go to the Embassy for your interview.

Cost of Visa is £65
Cost of Envelope (visa is sent via courier 24 hours later) £10.

You get the info before the interview and the medical exam. What he needs to bring with him is his vaccination record in order to avoid duplicating (AND pay additional monies for) any required vaccinations at the time of the medical exam.
