Note: I have just emailed what Morkai suggested to London, and I will post their reply when I receive it.
Peace,

Okay, I just have an email from London, saying:
*************
I'm afraid you're going to have to contact INS on this one. If we have
received the approved petition by the time of your interview, we will give
you the I-797 back. If not, it goes into the sealed visa package and what
INS does it with it from there is a bit of a mystery from our end!
**************
So no further forward really...does anyone have an answered email address for the INS?
Peace,
D.

you can always request a duplicate from the Service Centre daizey........the only problem is .........how long will they take to send it?It all boils down to....do you want the earliest interview date with a possible delay in starting AOS.....or........delay the interview and have no delay in starting AOS? You pays your money...........

Yeah, Abba, I know...but I, like you, will then be worried that they take ages in sending the new copy, delaying another process! I think I might hold out for London to get their own copy.

I had to send the original notice to London because the petition got
lost between CSC and London. They were not interested in copies and
refused my request for its return, stating that it would go in the
sealed brown envelope.
At the POE (Phoenix) the officer confirmed when I asked that it was in
fact in the envelope but politely refused my request for its return.
I submitted a copy when I applied for AOS and there was no problem but
I guess the real crunch will come when the AOS interview arrives (but
that is at least two years away here in Phoenix)

They accepted a copy for my AOS application but what happens on
interview day is something I'll have to wait to find out!

You might consider a free account at DFN-CIS
I've had an account there for a few years and find the service to be
very good

They aren't all assholes. The customs officer I had was very nice. He made
jokes when I couldn't figure out on the spot when my 90 days where up and
gave me advise on when and how I should go about getting my social security
number.
He even smiled several times

I wasn't commenting on that. Everyone I've dealt with so far has been
very pleasant and helpful but they still refused to give my original
I-797 back at the POE.
